WHO
ARE THE VICTIMS OF CRIME
Although
half of all crimes go unreported, the U.S. Department of Justice estimates
that one in four households are affected or experience a serious
crime every year. These numbers fail to acknowledge the suffering and
grief of crime victims and survivors, co‑ victims, and family members. To
some degree, we are All victims. Crime impacts the entire community.
COMPENSATION
You
may be compensated for physical injury losses suffered as a result of a
crime. Check with your insurance company first, as it may provide coverage
for personal injury or property loss due to a crime. if you have medical
expenses, as a result of a crime, and these are not covered by insurance,
you may be eligible for reimbursement under the Nebraska Crime Victims
Reparation Act. To be eligible, you must report the crime to the police
within 72 hours and apply within two years. The exceptions are 1) injury
in a motor vehicle accident, unless alcohol is involved 2) if living
with the offender or 3) anyone whose conduct contributed to his/her
injury.
GOALS OF VICTIM
ASSISTANCE
* To
help victims of crime deal with and overcome the short and long‑term
problems caused by victimization
* To
increase the responsiveness of the criminal justice system to the needs
and concerns of victims.
* To
acquaint the victim/witness with the court proceedings and be a support
system throughout the court process.
*To
develop the awareness of the community at large to crime‑related
issues.
SPEAKERS BUREAU
The
Victim Assistance Center will provide speakers for community and civic
groups, schools and businesses. Program topics include information about
the victim assistance program, and the services available to Butler/Polk
County residents.
VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers are an essential part of the Victim Assistance Program.
Concerned and caring persons who want to help victims of crime may contact

The
Victim Assistance Program is funded in part, by the U.S. Department of
Justice, Nebraska Crime Commission, the City of David City, Butler County,
and Polk County.

FACTS
-More than 50% of all women will experience violence
from intimate partners
-Domestic assaults result in more injuries requiring medical treatment
than rape, automobile accidents and mugging combined.
-90% of people who commit physical assault are men.
Males perpetrate 95% of all serious domestic violence.
-81% of men who beat their wives watched their fathers
beat their mothers or were abused themselves.
-Women age 16-24 experience the highest rate per capita
of intimae violence
-One in 12 or 8.2 million women will be stalked at some
point in their lifetime.
-12% of dating couple of high school age have
experienced violence in one of their relationships.
-It is estimated 1 in 4 men will use violence against
his partner in his lifetime.

Development Center will focus all available resources and services to the
restoration of wholeness to women arid children recovering from domestic
abuse,
FULFILLMENT
Through
the help and support of our community and church resources, Genesis
Personal Development Center is able to offer long term shelter, education,
self-help programs, friendship and other resources during this time of
transition.
Genesis Personal
Development Center is unique to our rural setting.
Many victims escaping
violent situations previously were forced to seek services in larger
communities. The victims were uprooted and faced additional changes, leaving schools, jobs, friends and family "This additional lack of
resources and stress made returning to the abuser an attractive
alternative.
Genesis Personal
Development Center will change the options, providing the housing and
resources necessary for victims to build the skills and confidence to
succeed.
Participants will
engage in program requirements that will enable them to refine life skills
and maintain employment.
Residents of the
Genesis House will, become enabled, empowered and independent, leaving
with the ability not only to survive, but also to thrive as productive
members of the community
Gensis Personal
Development Center is a 12 month commitment to self improvement.
